Interfaces between complex oxide materials
Electronic reconstructions produced by atomic scale variations of the structure and composition in epitaxial interfaces between transition metal oxides can give rise to dramatic macroscopic physical effects.
The presence of many competing interactions in these materials leads to complicated phase diagrams and a wide range of physical phenomena, such as metal-insulator transitions, colossal magnetoresistance,
high temperature superconductivity, multiferroicity and so on. In order to harness such challenging properties, experimental techniques with probes capable of studying materials in real space and down to
the atomic scale are essential. Aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy techniques form a duet with unique capabilities along these lines.
Being able to observe and explain the correlation between the atomic and the macroscopic worlds provides an exciting path towards the discovery of new physics and the development of devices based
on novel physical functionalities.
