    Dynamic and microscopic observations of deformation behavior by in situ TEM nanoindentation

    Mechanical properties of crystalline materials are crucially dependent on dislocation behavior in the course of deformation. Many efforts have been devoted to understand the dislocation behavior, and static dislocation analyses have been performed so far. However, the dynamic dislocation behavior is still ambiguous because of lack of experimental methods to directly observe the dislocation motion. Recent progress in in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) enables the direct observations of deformation processes. Especially, using the in situ TEM nanoindentation techniques, we can apply compressive stresses to an arbitrary area in a TEM specimen and dynamically observe the deformation processes even at the microscopic scale. In my study, I use the in situ TEM nanoindentation techniques to directly and dynamically observe the dislocation behavior during the deformation.
